As you may be aware, significant advances have been made in the fields of GIS and remote sensing in the recent years. More and more high resolution geospatial datasets (such as, rainfall, vegetation, topography, soil moisture, ground water, evapotranspiration, etc.) are now available free of charge! Unfortunately most of these datasets come in the formats which cannot be easily read or manipulated with common GIS softwares. As a results, their applications in Africa have been very limited.
